Abstract: James and Ian will lead a discussion on features of New Zealand’s emissions trading scheme as it currently operates and how it compares internationally. The Tax Policy Charitable Trust was established in 2012 with the aim of supporting thinking and discussion on tax policy in New Zealand and encouraging future tax policy leaders (for more information, visit https://taxpolicycharitabletrust.org.nz. This year, the Trust is delighted to be welcoming Ian Parry, Principal Environmental Fiscal Policy Expert at the International Monetary Fund, to speak at a series of events in New Zealand. Ian’s visit comes at a time when there is heightened interest in and debate regarding emissions reduction targets and the mechanisms for achieving these.

AGM Minutes
As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, we hosted our 2023 Annual General Meeting on 3 August. For those that weren’t able to attend, here are the minutes.
Executive Director’s Update
It’s been a busy first month in my role as Executive Director for LCANZI. We are in the process of putting together LCANZI’s first strategic plan, which is very exciting. I have enjoyed having really interesting discussions with the Board about what we want LCANZI to focus on in the next few years, and where we want to go as an organisation. Our strategic priorities are going to guide my work as ED, as I also put together our first operational annual plan and begin new fundraising efforts. We will keep all of our members updated on our progress!
One highlight from the last month was when Sophie and I met with Laura Clarke (CEO), Pete Barnett (Head of Energy Systems), and Maria Petzsch from Client Earth in London. As many of you will know, Client Earth is the biggest climate litigation and advocacy organisation in the world, with 300 staff across the UK, EU, Asia, and the US. It was wonderful being able to build this connection, discuss how we might be able to collaborate in the future, and pick their brains on running such a successful and high-impact climate litigation organisation.
As always, we are still busy working on climate action. Over the last month, we submitted on the Government Policy Statement for land transport, as well as on the international Climate Change Performance Index. Our submissions to the Court of Appeal for our appeal of the High Court’s judgment in our judicial review proceedings against the Climate Change Commission are also due later this month.
