Become a member of LCANZI - Become part of our journey and show your support for our organisation

There are two types of membership:

Full membership

Full membership is available if you hold a law degree - you do not need to hold a practicing certificate.

The base membership cost is $50.00, but you have the option of giving more to help us make more of an impact. All of our membership fees go towards our work. We are proudly not-for-profit, independent, and funded by our community.

You can select how much you would like to give as part of your membership below. Note that membership fees are not tax deductible (but donations are, and can be made over and above membership fees here).

What does membership mean?

Our members play a vital role in powering our legal and advocacy work to tackle climate change. Becoming a member means you can help support the future of LCANZI.

The membership fee is payable on joining, and annually from then on. The amount of the membership fee may be reviewed annually.

As a member, you can sign-up to volunteer with LCANZI, receive monthly updates about what we have been up to, attend seminars and workshops, meet like-minded lawyers across New Zealand, and vote on important decisions at our Annual General Meeting.

Participation in the activities of the society is voluntary. Members are not subject to any obligation to provide free or reduced-cost legal assistance or any other services to any person, and are not privy to confidential information about any of our work.

If you want more information about how the society is managed, see our rules.

Automatic renewal

By subscribing, you will be charged the subscription fee every 12 months unless you cancel your membership.

You can cancel your membership at any time by clicking here to manage your membership account, or emailing us on admin@lawyersforclimateaction.nz.

This automatic renewal system makes it much easier to manage our member database, so that we can spend more of our time on climate action, and it helps us plan activities in advance when we can rely on automatic renewals.

What if I am an existing member?

For existing members, if you subscribed via our website, it is likely that you already have an automatic payment set up - email us at admin@lawyersforclimateaction.nz if you are not sure if this is set up.

If you are an existing member who does not have automatic renewal set up or you have received an email from us letting you know that your membership has lapsed, you can sign up as a new member above (we will be able to see from our member database that you have been a member previously).

What are LCANZI’s processes for dealing with conflicts of interest?

If you are both a practicing lawyer and an LCANZI member, LCANZI may sometimes have interests which are adverse or potentially adverse to those of your clients. The extent of potential issues for most members is low, as ordinary members do not receive confidential information and do not hold decision-making roles. However, LCANZI has a Conflict Protocol to address this risk. Please email admin@lawyersforclimateaction.nz if you are a current or prospective member and would like access to the Conflict Protocol.

LCANZI is separate from its members

LCANZI is an incorporated society and a registered charity.  The LCANZI board guides the direction of LCANZI.  Members are interested in and generally supportive of LCANZI’s goals.  However, there is no implication that a member agrees with every action or statement of LCANZI.  This allows lawyers to be members of LCANZI even where they have professional interests which conflict with a particular step that LCANZI takes.  Members include barristers, solicitors at law firms or who work in government, and legal academics.
