LCANZI Newsletter - February 2022
Kia ora koutou,
Happy new year! We hope you all had a relaxing and safe break and wish you all an amazing 2022!
Please see our February newsletter below for an update on the last two months.
Climate Change Commission Judicial Review
On Monday 28 February 2022, LCANZI’s judicial review of the Climate Change Commission’s advice to the Minister of Climate Change, and the Minister’s subsequent decision to amend Aotearoa New Zealand’s nationally determined contribution under the Paris Agreement, will commence in the High Court in Wellington. The hearing is expected to run until the end of Friday 3 March 2022.
For those that are interested, we have created a document to provide background information in relation to this legal action which you can read here.
LCANZI SGM 2022
As notified in the December newsletter, LCANZI had an SGM on 26 January 2022. The business of the meeting was to vote on the attached proposed motion to amend our Rules to clarify purpose, facilitate application for charitable status, and clarify other aspects of Society Meeting procedure.
The motion was passed unanimously, thank you to those who attended. If you would like to read the minutes of the SGM, you can find them here.
LCANZI Fundraising
With LCANZI’s increasing climate action comes increasing costs, especially with litigation, that cannot be covered by membership fees alone. As mentioned in our December Newsletter, we are seeking donations from individuals, firms and other entities to enable us to continue our mahi in the future.
If you would like to donate, we have now updated the donations page on our website. If you would like to hear more about our donations policy please contact carol@lawyersforclimateaction.nz.
Submission on NZX Corporate Governance Code
For the last couple of months our Director’s Duties and Corporate Governance Sub-committee has been working hard on their submission to NZX on the Corporate Governance Code.
LCANZI made several recommendations including the incorporation of a Climate Change Guidance Note for NZX issuers. You can find a summary and the full submission here.
If you would like to join this Sub-Committee or have any questions please email admin@lawyersforclimateaction.nz.
Sustainability research
Oxygen Consulting have launched their third annual survey on the sustainability profession and are inviting eligible participants to take part. This year they are investigating the supply and demand challenges facing the profession and organisational readiness to meet the growing need for sustainability. You can read more about the research on their website here, and you can complete the survey here.
A group of University of Auckland students are running a research project looking at what climate justice means to the people of Aotearoa. If you would like to know more or complete their short questionnaire you can read their advertisement here.
Honorary Associate Life Membership awarded to Marta Fisch
At our January board meeting, the LCANZI Committee passed a motion to award our generous donor Marta Fisch an Honorary Associate Life Membership.
Marta’s donations have greatly contributed towards our climate action work because we were able to hire an administrator which freed up hours which we were spending on administrative work. This Honorary Membership is a token of our immense gratitude for Marta’s ongoing support and generosity.
Request for volunteers
LCANZI is always looking for more volunteers to join our sub-committees and help with our projects. At the moment we are specifically looking for people with criminal law experience to help with requests LCANZI gets from climate protestors seeking advice and/or representation. We are also looking for people interested in working on transport issues with All Aboard Aotearoa.
If you are interested in volunteering please email admin@lawyersforclimateaction.nz.
Ngā mihi maioha for your support and we will update you again soon.
Kia pai tō rā whakatā!
