2024 Year in Review

It’s been a massive year at Lawyers for Climate Action - read our 2024 Year in Review report here

Lawyers for Climate Action was founded by a group of lawyers in 2019 who wanted to be part of the solution to the climate crisis - using our legal skills and experience to make a difference, influence the legal system, and hold decision-makers to account.

This has been an incredible year for us as an organisation, and we’re so proud to be building a community of lawyers that does just that. The scientific evidence is clear: climate change is already here and will cause global catastrophe unless we cut emissions now. However, the global response is falling short of what’s required, and rhetoric isn’t being met with action. The law is an incredibly powerful tool in the response to climate change.

We see that in the impact of our work - whether it’s our greenwashing case against Z Energy, our judicial review challenging the ambition and integrity of our climate targets, or our advocacy and law reform work on the ETS or directors’ duties. We are focused on driving more effective climate action through the law, and have become a respected, credible, and constructive player in climate law and policy.

This year, we celebrated our fifth birthday, which has provided us with an opportunity to reflect on our progress. We are working hard to scale up our impact and ambition. This year we increased our income, our membership, and profile. And in just over one year, we have gone from an organisation entirely run by volunteers to an organisation with a small team of core staff - allowing us to better unlock and utilise our volunteer network, and ensure we can be a sustainable and secure organisation into the future.

This all wouldn’t be possible without our fantastic and dedicated board, our members, our volunteers, and our financial supporters - so thank you so much. Our work has been powered by our volunteers and pro bono legal support - driven by a shared belief that it’s not too late, and that we can use the law to enable effective climate action
